Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is robotic surgery?

Historically, doctors performed surgical procedures through large incisions in your body. However, advances in medical technology, including robotic surgery, have made more procedures available that use minimally invasive techniques.

At Platinum Women's Health, the doctors use the cutting-edge da Vinci robotic surgery system. The da Vinci system includes a robotic arm that translates your doctor’s hand movements into precise movements using small surgical tools which are inserted through tiny incisions in your body.

One of the critical surgical instruments is a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin tube with a light and camera on its tip that sends video from inside your body to a monitor in the operating room. This video feed allows your doctor to examine your internal organs and perform delicate surgical procedures without having to make a large incision.

What are the available robotic surgeries?

Dr. Neal and Dr. Quinata provide a variety of gynecologic surgeries using the da Vinci robotic surgery system including:

  • Hysterectomy (uterus removal)
  • Myomectomy (uterine fibroid removal)
  • Tubal ligation
  • Ovarian cyst removal
  • Treatments for endometriosis

Your doctor can also use robotic surgery to investigate the cause of infertility or to perform other laparoscopic pelvic operations.

What are the benefits of robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery is extremely precise. While your doctor controls the equipment, the robotic arm can rotate a full 360° and make smaller, more meticulous movements than are possible by even the most highly skilled human hands.

Robotic surgery also only requires a few tiny incisions in your abdomen. Smaller incisions not only reduce your risk of scarring and infection but also allow for a more rapid recovery than you would expect after traditional open surgery.

What should I expect during a robotic surgery?

Your experience during a robotic surgery is much the same as what you would experience with a laparoscopic procedure. Your doctor provides anesthesia before your operation to allow you to sleep through the surgery. However, when it comes to performing the surgery, instead of making the incisions and performing the surgery by hand with laparoscopic surgical instruments, your doctor uses the da Vinci operating system to control the robotic arm while viewing the surgical site on the computer monitor.

If you need a gynecologic surgery, talk to your doctor at Platinum Women's Health about your options and find out if robotic surgery is right for you. Call one of the offices or schedule an appointment online.
