They're not as scary as you think

You might be surprised to learn just how common high-risk pregnancies really are. To understand this better, there's a list of conditions below that can make any pregnancy "high-risk." It's important for you to understand that “high-risk” does not mean that you will have automatic problems. Your pregnancy may be high-risk if you have:

  • Diabetes
  • Seizure disorders
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney disease
  • Alcohol, drug use, smoking
  • Age under 17 or over 35
  • Multiple gestation (twins, etc.)
  • Multiple miscarriages
  • Genetic condition (e.g. Down syndrome, etc.)
  • History of pregnancy complcations (preterm labor, preeclampsia or seizures)
  • Infections (HIV, hepatitis C, cytomegalovirus, chickenpox, rubella, toxoplasmosis and syphilis)
  • High-risk medication use (e.g. lithium, Dilantin®, Depakene®) or Tegretol®)

Your pregnancy may also be high-risk if you have asthma, heart problems, lupus, sickle cell anemia or rheumatoid arthritis. Talk to our obstetrician doctors about your health problems, even if they are not listed above. High-risk pregnancy care may require more frequent evaluation and/or office visits. Your care may be coordinated with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist (high-risk ob specialist).
