Abnormal Bleeding Q & A

What is abnormal menstrual bleeding?

A “normal” period lasts about five days. It occurs every 21-35 days. If your period consistently lasts longer or occurs too often, or too infrequently, it’s considered irregular or abnormal. Bleeding that is extremely heavy and can’t be controlled with standard feminine hygiene products is also considered abnormal.

You may define your menstrual cycle and periods as abnormal if they prevent you from engaging in normal activities. Cramping so severe that you can’t attend school or work may also indicate a problem.

Why should I seek treatment for abnormal menstrual bleeding?

If you’ve experienced irregular bleeding, you know it can cause sleep disruption, embarrassment, inconvenience, and anxiety.

In addition to the problem of dealing with an irregular flow, abnormal bleeding can be a sign of a serious health issue that needs to be addressed. Ignoring irregular bleeding can delay your treatment or make your eventual treatment path less effective than if it began earlier.

Many women with heavy bleeding experience iron-deficiency anemia, which can become a serious health condition in its own right.

What causes abnormal bleeding?

A variety of issues can cause abnormal uterine bleeding. These include:

  • Uterine fibroids and polyps
  • Endometriosis
  • Miscarriage
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Problems with an IUD
  • Certain types of cancer

A comprehensive evaluation and exam are required to determine the cause of your irregular bleeding. Determining a cause is the first step in finding relief.

How is abnormal bleeding treated?

Exactly how your bleeding is treated depends on the cause. Very often, minimally invasive options control your bleeding, including birth control pills or lifestyle changes.

But if you have a condition such as abnormal uterine fibroids or endometriosis, you may need more concentrated treatment. Surgery to remove any offending tissue is often the best option. Dr. Neal and Dr. Quinata can help you understand your condition and the best way for you to find relief.

At Platinum Women’s Health, Dr. Neal and Dr. Quinata offer all the details and insight needed to help make an informed decision about your health and how you should treat your abnormal bleeding.
